1st prize – Team Ardent’s write-up:
An Inquiry into Neo-Typologies - A chapter of rebirth, to fall, folded to eternity, a metropolis reconstructed. Orchard Road, once the pinnacle of Singaporean retail, is perishing. The building was envisioned as a multilayered machine that fundamentally serve as a support to the pre-existing neighbours, thereby seeking for a transition of rebirth. As shoppers now have the ease of purchasing necessities from heartland malls, orchard’s clientele is evolving. This shift in demand has caused a shift in supply, with many who used to regard the Somerset belt to have lost most of its original allure, in addition to the rising sentiment of elitism and hierarchy. The building will be a keystone of the orchard landscape, rebirthing the Singapore Shopping experience and yet not detracting the merits of the existing proximal buildings that atmospherically transcends trends and time.

2nd prize - Team ACE’s write-up:
Orchard Hills - Amidst the throng of developments along Orchard road stands the Orchard Hills - a high density mixed-use development that breaks away from the traditional podium and tower blocks in the vicinity to introduce a brand new lifestyle for both residents and visitors. Orchard Hills is designed to harmonise with nature, whereby it boasts a multitude of green design features to promote self-sufficient and sustainable living. At the residential area, lush greenery drapes from railings, green voids and rooftop terraces, cooling the internal spaces, creating a comfortable living environment for residents. The green voids and rooftop terraces also serve as social nodes, ones that support activities like exercising and farming, encouraging residents to interact and bond. Residents not only enjoy the benefits of the greenery within the complex, but they can also actively take part to nurture nature through urban farming that will in turn benefit them. At the commercial area, a vibrant shopping street has been carved through the site. Terraces overlook this street, allowing for many direct sightlines within the space, in turn creating many exciting opportunities for shoppers.

3rd prize – Team Hooray Souffle’s write-up:
Kampung Orchard - Orchard is often seen as a vanguard of consumerism, the antithesis of sustainability. Our project Kampung Orchard aims to flip this notion by providing dedicated spaces to reinforce the idea that a keen focus on the community can lead to a sustainable future. Using sustainable design practices and extensive PPVC technologies, Kampung Orchard is optimised to be energy-efficient, thermally comfortable, and sustainable in its construction process. Lush garden terraces and urban farms envelope residential units, acting as thermal buffers to not only protect living spaces from heat but to also encourage members of the community to work for one another in maintaining their shared green spaces. Regular market days allow the residents to display the fruits of their collective labour, showcasing to the public that Orchard can be an exemplar of sustainability rather than a slave to consumerism.
